The media is abuzz with a concerning new trend, fueled largely by the rise of the Internet, gadgets, and smartphones: people are spending an alarming amount of time indoors—up to 90% of their waking hours. However, it's well-known that a healthy lifestyle begins outdoors. In the UK, numerous scientific studies have demonstrated that spending time in nature reduces stress hormone levels, leading to greater peace and life satisfaction. The benefits are even more pronounced when we share our time with animals. While pets like dogs and cats are often used in rehabilitation centers across the country, there's one animal that stands out when it comes to finding inner peace and unparalleled happiness: the alpaca!
Join us in Otterbourne, Hampshire, on a sunny day for an exhilarating Alpaca walking tour and experience the joy that comes from being outdoors. Alpaca walking is a fantastic weekend activity for the whole family, where exercise feels effortless as you lead a beautiful alpaca through Hampshire's lush countryside.
As a family-run business, we invite you to embark on an alpaca trekking adventure in Hampshire. Our alpacas are our pride and joy, and we offer you the chance to walk alongside them, feel their soft fleece, and let your stress melt away as you listen to their gentle humming. One look into their big brown eyes, and you'll be hooked! Trekking with alpacas in Hampshire is a unique weekend experience and one you'll cherish forever.
Otterbourne is a charming, secluded village where chalk streams meander through ancient riverbeds on their way to the sea, just 11 miles away. We own 12 acres of lush grasslands along The Itchen Navigation, an area once used to transport goods by barge to London, Winchester, and beyond. With the barges long gone, the animals have returned to their natural habitats. Our guests often delight in spotting otters, kingfishers, dragonflies, and a variety of colorful insects and butterflies.
If you decide to join us for an alpaca walking tour, be sure to wear comfortable shoes. The tour begins at 10 AM and lasts for two hours. We'll start with a quick health and safety briefing, including tips on how to hold the alpacas and what to do if they get a bit cheeky! We also provide a fascinating talk about these unique animals, sharing what makes alpacas so special and lovable.
After introductions and haltering, you'll meet your alpaca for the morning, with time to take pictures and get acquainted. Once everyone is ready, we’ll walk through the field, pointing out more wildlife, such as otters, kingfishers, and birds of prey like buzzards. We'll also stop to admire the main alpaca herd, including the adorable cria (baby alpacas). As we pass through a gate into the bottom meadow, we’ll arrive at the tranquil riverfront. Walking alongside the river, you'll feel the serene atmosphere as we head south toward meadow gate, before circling back to our starting point. At the head of the river, we’ll take a moment to soak in the beauty of our surroundings, cooling down under the trees as we chat more about our favorite subject: alpacas!
Alpacas are gentle and beautiful animals, beloved for their soft fleece. If you’re considering adding a unique pet to your farm, this is the perfect opportunity to ask questions about what it’s like to care for an alpaca.
After our break, we return to the river, heading for the water hole where the alpacas can enjoy a refreshing drink. Many visitors also take the opportunity to visit the nearby Brambridge Park Garden Centre on Kiln Lane, where they can find tools, accessories, and everything they need for their home and garden. After experiencing our Nature walk, you might find yourself inspired to spend more time outdoors, whether it’s through walking, spending time with pets in the wild, or exploring the benefits of horticultural therapy!
You can choose to walk with your own alpaca or share one between two people (prices vary depending on your choice). While there are limited children’s activities in July and August, children under nine are generally not admitted, as our insurance does not cover them. Children over 12 can lead a halter-trained alpaca along the Itchen River, while those over nine can accompany an adult. All minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Preparation for this activity is simple. Dress appropriately for the weather—we walk rain or shine, so bring your best outdoor boots and a raincoat (a hat is also a good idea). We recommend bringing water and sunscreen during the summer to avoid sunburn. Whether it’s raining or sunny, each season brings a distinct beauty to our nature walks, making every experience worth having at least once in a lifetime.
Feel free to take pictures of the animals and the scenery during the walk; we also capture many moments and share them on our social media platforms. Many visitors ask us to post new pictures of "their alpaca," whom they miss even after just one meeting! Indeed, many families return time and time again, forming lasting friendships with us and a special bond with the alpacas.
