What is an Alpaca?

Alpacas are a species of South American camelid, closely related to llamas, and native to the Andes Mountains. They are known for their soft, luxurious fleece, gentle personalities, and soulful eyes. Unlike their larger llama cousins, alpacas are smaller, quieter, and easier to handle — making them perfect for walks and experiences with visitors.

My Experience Walking Alpacas at Hensting

When I booked an alpaca walk at Hensting Alpacas, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But Piper the llama and the friendly alpacas stole my heart from the moment we met. They were gentle, curious, and surprisingly easy to walk. I learned about their care, personalities, and how they hum to each other. It felt like more than just a walk — it was a peaceful, meaningful connection.

We walked through wooded trails and open fields, with time for photos and questions along the way. At the end, I visited the on-site shop for alpaca wool and souvenirs. It was easily one of the best outdoor activities I’ve done in Hampshire.

If you're looking for something calm, joyful, and different — alpaca walking at Hensting is it.
